Nghe an Khmu – Vietnamese – Thai – English

The Nghe An Khm-Vietnamese-Thai-English Dictionary is based on the first part of the larger, on-going research project, the Thesaurus of Khmu Dialects in Southeast Asia, which is being prepared by two Thai linguists at Mahidol University, Suwilai Premsrirat (Project Leader) and Mayuree Thawornpat (Researcher), Khmu speakers from various locations, and scholars from the countries where the Khmu speakers live. This research project is being sponsored by the Southeast Asian Studies Regional Exchange Program (SEASREP), Tokyo, Japan. For the compilation of the Nghe An Khmu-Vietnamese-Thai-English Dictionary, Mr. Lo Van Tuan, a Khmu from Nghe An province, and Mrs. Trinh Dieu Thinh, a researcher from the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Hanoi, collaborated on this project. Mr. Greg Lyons of the Summer Institute of Linguistics also provided valuable assistancee to the researchers in the use of the computer software program “SIL Shoebox” which facilitated the data entry process. The dictionary which was compiled during 1997-1998 comprises of three parts: Part I: Introduction gives information about the Khmu in Vietnam, Khmu phonology and syntax, and bibliography, Part II presents the Khmu entries which are alphabetically arranged according to the Khmu phonemic spelling. The meaning in Vietnamese, English and Thai are provided so that this dictionary can be used by the people of all the nations which are involved, as well as people in general; and Part III is an English Finderlist which provides a convenient way to find particular words.
